Models

There are mainly three different models of men's swimming trunks:

  • briefs : they are certainly the most popular training costumes, they offer minimum coverage and maximum freedom of movement and it is precisely for this reason that many swimmers consider them the most comfortable ;
  • jammer : it is the same model as the competition costumes. In recent years, especially abroad, many swimmers have also started using it in training. The fabric is obviously different from the competition costumes, as it is free of carbon fibers, which would excessively compress the muscles during training. They are used by swimmers of all levels and exist in two different lengths: up to above the knee and up to mid-thigh ;
  • leggings : this model is a middle ground between the brief and the jammer and is perfect for all those athletes who prefer greater coverage and support than the brief and who want to keep, at the same time, his own freedom of movement.

Fabrics

The swimming costumes are made of polyester and lycra, present in variable percentages. Polyester is a fabric that offers compression and support and has a longer life than lycra which is lighter and more elastic, although not as adherent and resistant as polyester.

Which fabric to choose

The criteria applied by men for choosing the costume are the same as those used by women. In fact, it is necessary to base the choice on the frequency of training and on the use that, consequently, one must make of the costume. Competitors usually use PBT (100% polyester) costumes, precisely because they are more resistant to wear and allow the athlete to combine comfort and fit with compression and support. All occasional swimmers or people who train 2/3 times a week can opt for a costume that has a higher percentage of elastane (lycra); these costumes have an excellent fit, adhere perfectly to body shapes and do not cause groin irritation which are usually caused by the friction between the costume and the skin.

Factors to consider before buying

Before buying a swimming costume, make sure it has a good one:

  • fit. The training costume must adhere perfectly to the body, as if it were to become a second skin. It must be snug, as too loose a swimsuit could take on water and slow down the athlete, but it must not be too tight either, as it would be uncomfortable and the compression produced would be counterproductive;
  • duration. The duration of a swimming costume depends on the fabric, the frequency of use and the care and maintenance.

Care and maintenance

In conclusion, we list the precautions to be followed for the care and maintenance, essential so that the costume does not spoil excessively with the passage of time.

  • after training, rinse your swimsuit under cold water and do not use soaps or detergents;
  • do not store the costume in plastic bags! Rather wrap it in a towel;
  • as soon as you arrive home, hang your swimsuit away from heat sources such as radiators and stoves: high temperatures can damage fabrics;
  • never use a washing machine, dryer, iron and aggressive detergents;
  • in order not to fade the colors try not to dirty the costume with vaseline or sunscreen, when you apply them on the skin, and try not to dry the costume in direct sunlight;
  • to maintain elasticity, try to alternate the various costumes: the fabric fibers may not have returned to their original shape if you wear the costume again only a few hours after training.
